Seriously, What Is An Adult?
The debate over “top surgeries” for adolescents missed one question: when is someone a minor?
This week, a debate exploded online which not only uncovered the gritty realities of transgender surgeries for adolescents, but also missed a deeper and more fundamental issue in our society: what is an adult?
To recap, this started when the Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh shared information about a San Francisco surgeon, Dr. Scott Mosser, who performs (among other surgeries) “top surgery” on minors.
“Let me introduce you to Dr. Scott Mosser, who cuts the breasts off of adolescent girls,” Walsh tweeted. “Many surgeons across the country will and do inflict ‘top surgery’ on minors. Mosser assures us that he follows very ‘strict’ guidelines before performing double mastectomies on children.”
Political commentator Kim Iversen responded, saying “It’s their body, their choice. If their parents or anyone is pressuring them, let them live with that and take it up with them later. It’s none of our business how others choose to live their lives.”
This sparked Twitter’s standard back-and-forth, with Walsh asking “Are you as insane as this comment makes you appear or are you just pretending so that nobody calls you transphobic,” and “One wonders what else she thinks children can consent to. Just a repugnant, insane, and morally abominable point of view. Automatically lose all credibility on all other topics forever.”
