We’ve been hearing an awful lot about the death of DEI recently: that woke is finally done.
And yes, in the world of politics it’s certainly looking that way, with Donald Trump shredding DEI and wokeness with executive order after executive order.
But in the culture, there’s still a lot of work to do. Yes, things aren’t as bad as they were, but that doesn’t mean we’ve won.
Last night’s Super Bowl was proof of that.
It was a resounding victory for the Philadelphia Eagles — or, as the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry announced, a stunning win for Kansas City 40,000 points to 3 — but a boring game, made worse by 5’5” Kendrick Lamar showing up in a pair of women’s jeans from the early 2000s with his hand glued to his hip and giving what felt like a low-budget dress rehearsal of a liberal arts college performance titled “Urban Music”.
And that leaves us with the only thing worth talking about: the ads.
Don’t get me wrong, we got a small hint of the Super Bowl ads of old — including Glen Powell as Goldilocks…gosh — but make no mistake, woke was still on display.
